A Strong Start to the Year

The year has started on a positive note with the Foundational Level Nurse – Assisting at ERCP course, delivered in collaboration with the ABUHB Royal Gwent Hospital Endoscopy team and the HEIW Endoscopy Academy of Wales. This course marks an important step forward for endoscopy nursing education in Wales and has already made a strong impression on those who attended.

A Collaborative and Experienced Faculty

Led by Clinical Lead Dr Marek Czajkowski, with support from HEIW Endoscopy Academy of Wales Nurse Lead Rachel Rees and Cook Medical’s Andrea Perris, the course brought together a dedicated and experienced faculty. Teaching was delivered by Sabrina Cox, Helene Amigo, and Marinel Rodolfo, whose combined knowledge and practical experience created a supportive and engaging learning environment.

Supporting a Complex Area of Practice

ERCP is a complex and high-risk procedure, and having a skilled, confident team is essential. This course recognised the vital role endoscopy nurses play and focused on giving them the knowledge and skills needed in practice. It wasn’t just about theory - it was about building confidence, encouraging involvement, and helping nurses feel more prepared in real clinical settings.

Positive Feedback and Real Impact

Over 90% of attendees rated the course 9/10 or higher, and around 95% said it helped improve their confidence.

One of the key strengths of the course is how accessible it is. It worked well for a wide range of learners - whether completely new to ERCP, building their understanding, or experienced nurses wanting a refresher. Everyone was able to take something useful away, making it feel inclusive and worthwhile.

Empowering the Nursing Role

What stood out most was how empowering the course felt. It reinforced that endoscopy nurses and assistants are a key part of the team - not just supporting in the background, but actively contributing to patient care and safety. For many, it was a reminder that their role matters and that their knowledge and experience are valued.

Learning Together

There was also a strong sense of shared learning throughout. Nurses and assistants were able to learn from each other, ask questions, and reflect on their own practice. That kind of environment makes a real difference - building confidence and encouraging ongoing development.

Looking Ahead

Courses like this are important for the future of endoscopy in Wales. By creating more learning opportunities, we can continue to develop a skilled and motivated workforce. It also helps raise the profile of endoscopy nursing, supporting its growth at both a professional and national level.

Final Thoughts

Overall, the course has been a great start to the year. It was practical, engaging, and genuinely supportive of endoscopy nurses/assistants at all stages of their careers. Hopefully, this is just the beginning, with more opportunities like this to come.
